Solar buddy at Balgowlah Boys Northern Beaches Senior and at Mackellar Girl's Northern Beaches senior campus.

This project is in partnership with our colleagues at Manly Rotary Club who funded the exercise.

What is a Solar Buddy?

Solar Buddy is a small solar-powered light that can be used in places where no power is available. PNG our closest neighbour, has many villages that have no power, and little can be done in their homes at night.

Moreover, the program improves inter-cultural understanding, fosters critical thinking skills and is a great way to network and develop relationships all while making a positive impact for children living in energy poverty.

The Project:

Balgowlah Rotary having a well-established relationship with Mackellar Girls campus and Balgowlah Boys Northern Beaches Secondary College took the components to make 100 lights, contacted the two schools to ensure that we could get this finished in the last remaining days of the school year.

The project was managed by Pascal Grant, our Youth Services Officer. Pascal has now taken delivery of the Buddy lights (50) from Mackellar and another 50 assembled Buddy lights from Balgowlah Boys Northern Beaches Secondary College.

Pascal said, “We assisted by having to learn about solar lights, how they work, how to put them together and how to repack and fit 50 assembled lights into a specially provided plastic container bin, I did discover that we are not as nimble as we may have been.”

The Head of Sciences, Antwanet Karandonis who I liaised with at Mackellar High said, "Students loved it and would have done more if available (shall keep this in mind for our next Buddy Light project). The kids/parents in PNG will be delighted to have the lights, especially those from the villages who have very limited access to electricity/power."

The Solar Buddy story:

SolarBuddy is an impact organisation uniting a global community to illuminate the futures of all children. We strive to provide opportunities for all ...

Without access to safe and reliable energy, children and their families are plunged into total darkness every night. This is devastatingly limiting for their education, damaging to their health and well-being, and detrimental to the environment we all share.
