Community Northern Beaches - Guest speakers

Our Guest speakers on Tuesday Feb 7  were Craig Stevens CEO, Community Northern Beaches (CNB); and Kandy Tagg, President of CNB.

Craig Stevens, CEO

Kandy Tagg, President

Since 1977, the organisation has been serving the Northern Beaches community and was previously known as Manly Community Centre.

Now called Community Northern Beaches (CNB), it is a small local community-based organisation supporting vulnerable and disadvantaged people. CNB is often the first point of contact for people experiencing homelessness, domestic & family violence, and refugee settlement challenges.

CNB also focusses on targeted earlier intervention with families, youth, and children to make the biggest difference early on. The organisations’ Community Hub Drop-in also enables them to foster meaningful connections to assist people in crisis with their immediate needs and help connect them to support. (OneMeal is part of this, as is Lifeline Financial Counselling.)

Community Northern Beaches’ mission is to build connections, strengthen community and foster future wellbeing by providing accessible support and early intervention services that are responsive to the community's needs.

Locations:

Currently there are two Community Hubs - Head Office in Manly

Multicultural Service in Brookvale: (Large Nepalese population)

The vision to put an office nearer Mona Vale.

CNB is manages an impressive number of Community Services with managers in several key areas including:

·      Domestic Violence & Welfare

·       Domestic & Family Violence

·      Volunteer Services & Community Support

·      Homeless Outreach

·      Homelessness, Domestic & Family Violence Support & IT lead

·      Family, Child, and Youth Services.

·      Multicultural Services

·      Settlement Case Worker

Over 100 volunteers also help in these areas!

A few specific programs were outlined:

“Love Bites”: A Domestic and Family Violence and Sexual Assault prevention/educational program developed by NAPCAN for young people aged 15-17 years. Currently the program is delivered at no cost to schools.

.

“Building Blocks”: A professionally lead series of group meetings held over 6-8 weeks to assist female victims of domestic violence rebuild their confidence and connections in the community. (This has been previously supported by Balgowlah Rotary)

Craig outlined the need for funding with servicing many of the programs together with additional staff and donations for food. Although Local, State and Federal governments do give assistance with funding, the need for longevity is very apparent. Moreover, Covid has affected most charities and aid agencies with increased demand and lower capacity for raising funds.

All members gained a better understand of the multidimensional areas of care and assistance given by CNB to the needy and less fortunate members in our community. The work that CNB does is greatly appreciated plus any support that can be given to them would be most beneficial.

The meeting thanked Craig and Kandy for the valuable work that they manage in the community and their presentation to our meeting.

The CNB annual report 2021-22 is available HERE

(Thanks to Lindy for notes on the meeting)

Our Minister for Fun sent the following:

7 of us enjoyed the current production of Love from a Stranger....an Agatha Christie, in a sold-out theatre, with a great twist at the end.   It was followed, of course, by a social dinner at the Belvedere, just up the street, for tasty Greek style food.

Theatre going Rotarians, Paul, Sue and John.

Sue, MFF.

Well done Sue!
