Helping the Community: OneMeal and Balgowlah Rotary

OneMeal was suggested by Community Northern Beaches as the appropriate organisation through which our flood relief funds could be best put to use in our local community.

The ONE MEAL STORY

On seeing what they did, we asked where our club might be able to contribute and it was then that we offered, last July, to do a delivery run each Monday.

OneMeal is fully staffed, managed and operated entirely by volunteers. Food is collected from local restaurants, supermarkets, manufacturers. Cooking and portion preparation is done by many volunteers and then orders and deliveries assembled in the hub facility in Brookvale.

Drivers collect the meals plus fruit, vegetables and groceries and drop them off at homes and places that community organisations have notified to OneMeal as requiring/needing assistance.

Balgowlah Rotary provides a team of two members each week to work alongside other volunteers delivering meals, prepared by OneMeal.

The Rotarians rostered each week from our club for the Northern Beaches run include:

  • Helen Gray
  • Sue Terry
  • Lindy Myers
  • Paul Apps
  • Joy Apps
  • John O'Brien
  • Rick van Brugge
  • Heather Sare
  • Robert Exner

  • Michael Brent

and Michael Mead who does a bulk delivery run to Hornsby each Thursday - normally with another One Meal Volunteer, Chris Gordon.

Catholic Care normally has  60 frozen meals

Five major charities (Catholic Care, St Vincent's de Paul, Fusion, Salvation Army and Mission Australia) then apportion their bulk deliveries to the needy people that they support in their local communities .

OneMeal is always looking for volunteers to assist at all levels of the operation.
