It doesn't just happen at meetings

Our MFF, Sue has been busy!

Chau Chak Visit - August 2022

13 Balgowlah Rotary Club members, partners and friends very much enjoyed a general interest excursion to the Chau Chak Wing Museum at Sydney University.

The museum was opened only a few years ago, and is a welcoming, attractive display area, entry is free.

We were well engaged by our lovely volunteer guide, for an introductory tour (which generously stretched to almost 2 hours! ) before we enjoyed lunch on the Sounds Cafe terrace.

All agreed we will be back for other visits.

Waratah Walk - 16 September 2022

Five Balgowlah Rotarians enjoyed a delightful walk at Duffys Forest in Northern Sydney.  Sue arranged for us to meet then walk along the track then take the Long Trail in Ku-Ring-Gai National Park

We were lucky enough to see a few stunning Waratahs in full flower, such a pleasure....

The blue painted on the stem is to deter theft.

We followed by a coffee and chat, of course.

And Lindy has been busy as well:

 -  Police Awards

Jade Marshall - Rotary Balgowlah awardee

The write up from Northern Beaches Advocate on the proceedings and our club at the Awards is most interesting.

Presented by Rotary Club of Balgowlah President Linda Myers (image above, right), Plain Clothes Senior Constable Jade Marshall (image above, left) received a Rotary Award for Police Officer of the Year for Northern Beaches Police Area Command in recognition for her work running Strikeforce Katungal.

An investigation commenced in late 2020, when multiple victims unknown to each other reported sexual assaults that bore similarities. All victims were reluctant to pursue the matters criminally, and all were vulnerable teenagers with reservations about a criminal investigation.

Senior Constable Marshall identified the pattern of repeated reports to the attention of supervisors and provided ongoing victim support. After a 15-year-old victim was sexually assaulted at Dee Why, police were able to identify the offender and he was arrested immediately.

It was Senior Constable Marshall’s rapport with the earlier victims that allowed police to encourage them to join together and proceed criminally in a united effort to stop the offending. Ultimately, charges were laid relating to five victims.

Due to the significant team effort of all police who worked on the Strikeforce under Senior Constable Marshall, the evidence against the offender was overwhelming and he pleaded guilty to one count of sexual assault or sexual touching against each victim at Sydney District Court in April 2022. He remains in custody to be sentenced in November 2022.

Rotary’s Police Employee of the Year Award for the Northern Beaches Police Area Command was awarded to Roster Officer Kerry-Ann Prince (image above, left), who has been responsible for scheduling of police officers deployed during COVID-19, border patrols, natural disasters and staff shortages caused by front-line officers falling ill during the pandemic.

Perhaps the most important police job of all, Ms Prince was tasked with balancing the Northern Beaches Police Area Command’s contribution to state-wide operations while maintaining the local police roster and safeguarding officer health and wellbeing, ensuring there was minimal disruption.
