Club Business Meeting

Club Business Meeting

With no guest speaker, our meeting held on Tuesday 21st focused on Club Business. We were joined by Area Governor Beaches, Johanna Johns.

The Return & Earn project was further discussed:

1.       Promotion & Logistics:

  • The project to be called Recycle for Rotary
  • A small project team will coordinate the activities under Bev’s leadership.
  • Northern Beaches Council (Michael Regan) has donated 10 large wheelie bins for use as collection points. Clarification of new or used being sort.
  • Selection of possible bin locations and suitable supporting businesses/collection points by club members who reside in that suburb.
  • Bev has designed some relatable advertising posters, promotional and similar materials, and starter kits to help spread the word.
  • A consolidation point at Terrey Hills is confirmed for collection by a contractor.
  • A special project account has been set up to capture the project revenue and ensure it can be correctly dispersed or distributed.
  • The project has great potential if the cause is seen as worthy in our community.

2.       Target Program:

  • Focus on Youth is a key objective for the club programs and assistance for the years 2021/22.
  • Whilst Youth programs receive significant club support most of these Youth programs do not specifically focus on the disadvantaged.
  • Moreover, the club do not want funds applied to broadly delivered school class programs, but specifically to the group of individuals in need of possible counselling, education and guidance.
  • We have contacted John Kelly at Community Northern Beaches seeking a possible program that specifically targets or exclusively caters for Disadvantaged Youth: A jointly promoted and well administered program possibly using their professional contacts and connections.

·       John has passed our request onto Jan Schatz, Manager – Family, Child & Youth who works across various organisations, schools, etc engaged with youth on the Beaches.

Membership Initiatives:

·       Roger outlined the membership Strategic Plan.

·       The goal of 6 new members and the actions and resources to achieve it was outlined

·       Member retention was also outlined.

·       Significantly, membership categories was fully described to give clarity/ requirements in the key categories of Friends of Rotary, Potential Member, Honorary Member and Full Member; together with the activities and preferred method of communication for each.

Cluster proposal on PNG:

The Services Committee reviewed the material for the $100,000 proposal for the building of a satellite office for ADI (Australian Doctors International) in PNG Western Province. Support for this by our club was not recommended for a variety of reasons:

-        The project size and funding requirements are too large even when split across all clubs in the cluster.

-        Australian Government support for such programs that is usually provided through Oz Aid was not shown or proposed.

-        No integration with Australian Government vaccination programs – especially Covid vaccine rollout was present.

-        Grant applications for large projects should done in conjunction with supporting clubs.

-        Sustainably/servicing of equipment in remote locations with difficult access of equipment poses significant difficulties and ongoing costs.

-        No outputs from the program were apparent, only inputs.

Other items

·       Fundraising committee have made the necessary changes to our calendar to comply with Covid restrictions.

·       Dr Ray Hodgson’s presentation on Nepal Hospital Building Project has been postponed.

·       A Club meeting on Melbourne Cup Day evening (Tuesday Nov 2)  is still planned.

·       The club wine offer from Ian Grayburn is closing and the club thanked Ian for this support and contribution.

·       Changeover dinner will be deferred until meetings are permitted. Refunds available if required.

Informal ZOOM gathering - ZOOM Drink

Since ZOOM meetings necessarily can only focus on Rotary business, an informal club get-together (via ZOOM) was held on Saturday afternoon, September 18. It allowed members and partners to communicate socially and was most successful. The camaraderie element between members is partly addressed with such an undertaking and all participants agreed that it should be repeated. Well done Lindy and Sue.

Another Walk:

Sue lead another walk on the Hole in the Wall Track at Manly on a warm sunny mid-morning on Friday, September 24, and ensuring that the two small groups adhered to Covid group requirements. The sun was warm, the views were stunning, flowers were in bloom then we enjoyed a coffee at Fairy Bower.

Great to get out of the house and enjoy our life on the Beaches!

Will’s passion for community development commenced on a rubbish tip in the remote islands of northeast Indonesia where he witnessed the slow, seeping sense of minds itching over the possibilities of education. As a trained teacher and counsellor, Will considers building empathy, understanding and compassion as the indispensable foundation to prepare and address present and future challenges.
