Cluster Muster March 5, 2024

Our first cluster dinner for the year was a great success with almost 80 members and guests in attendance.

John O'Brien our great club photographer was taking some photos of the attendees....

DGN: John Campbell, Guest Speaker: Martin Thomas AM,  Pres Balgowlah Rotary: Roger Gary

The Rotary club of Warringah's Newsletter reported on the evening and gave a great summary of the night.

“Organised by the Rotary Club of Balgowlah, Assistant Governor John Campbell was MC and outlined how the five Northern Beaches Clubs, Balgowlah, Belrose, Manly, Warringah and Upper Northern Beaches, are having a great impact, locally, across the nation and internationally.

John outlined many of the projects and campaigns our clubs are involved in and that we are making such a positive difference across our areas of focus – promoting peace, fighting disease, providing clean water, sanitation and hygiene, saving mothers and children, supporting education, growing local economies and protecting the environment.

He also recognised our “avenues of service” where Rotarians are involved in club, vocational, community, international and youth service. “

 GUEST SPEAKER : Martin Thomas

The advertised guest speaker Tony Irwin sadly came down with Covid (yes, it is still around) but was ably replaced by Martin Thomas.

Martin Thomas AM

Martin was born and educated in the UK, moving to Perth in 1967 in his early 30s, then to Sydney. He has a lifetime career in energy consulting first with Merz Australia and then, following a merger, with Sinclair Knight Merz specialising in power generation and industrial energy conservation in Australia and overseas. He has held many honorary positions within the industry and in 1992 he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for services to energy and engineering and in 2008 received the Peter Nicol Russell Memorial Medal, the highest award of the Institution of Engineers Australia and in 2015 the Annual Award of the Australian Nuclear Association.

He posed the question “should the future supply of electricity in Australia include nuclear power?”

His talk was aimed appropriately at the non-expert audience so we could understand varying aspects of the debate which has been raised in the public again this week.

Martin addressed the key issues and mis-information being promulgated by opponents of nuclear energy.

In a show of hands, almost all those present supported the proposition that nuclear energy needs to be placed back onto the agenda to be considered as a potentially viable and economical energy source that complements renewables.

A copy of Martin's presentation has been forwarded to members.

Boathouse Social Evening:

Hello to all the lovely group who gathered ( just in time, before the rain storm) at the Boathouse on Friday evening. (23rd Feb )

L to R: Rhonda Scotter, Robert Thompson, Sue Terry, Lindy Myers, Michael Mead, Denise Horan, Diane Mead, Roger Gray, Helen Gray, Ann Thompson.

Thank you all for supporting the social evening, and your appreciative comments afterwards.   It was just a relaxed time, to share friendship and stories, and appeared to be much enjoyed.   And many thanks to those who so generously purchased those Happy Hour drinks.

( Heather has asked we please repeat it next summer, so she can come....she is envious!!
She is doing well, in hip rehab).

Sue Terry.
