Winter Quiz 2023

Name 3 countries that border Ukraine apart from Russia. What is the name of electrical resistance that is represented by the Greek letter OMEGA. Identify these capital cities from the photos.

Do you think we all could answer them correctly on the night? Quizmaster David in action David Stewart-Hunter conducted another great quiz night in the main auditorium at Balgowlah RSL on Saturday evening with over 100 people attending. It was really entertaining and most enjoyable!

David Stewart-Hunter: our Quizmaster for the evening

Subjects ranged from Sport to Books, music and identifying personalities from photos. David was ably assisted by his partner Sally Fox and her friend Moira Payne.

Sally also conducted a great set of 10 questions about Women, which was extremely popular with most tables.

The club's Annual Quiz night gives valuable funds assisting projects with local charities including LIfeline Northern Beaches, Bear Cottage and Dalwood Spilstead Services together with Rotary Youth projects offered to students from local High schools.

The evening was opened by President Roger Gray who introduced David and thanked Rotarian Lindy Myers and the fundraising team for the great job of organising the night.

MEMBERSHIP SURVEY:

At the meeting on Tuesday July 18, the findings from the Membership Survey were presented. Michael Mead thanked the members who participated.

The report highlighted key reasons for members joining Rotary, whether members are being fulfilled and able to contribute, what members want, together with many ideas for creative improvement. A copy of the report has been forwarded to all club members.

A workshop to create an action plan based on the findings will take place on August 29 and full details and venue will be announced once finalised.

STREETWORK: THANK YOU TO ROTARY BALGOWLAH

The club received a photo and a very warm thank you from Streetwork Board member Philip Loveday regarding our donation to the aerosol art workshop:

Thank you so much to all your members for the $1,500 grant to cover the cost of the recent aerosol art workshop at Buckettys in Brookvale.

As you can see from the photos attached the freshly painted container looks fantastic. And much more importantly, the two-day workshop was a real mentoring success, providing our young people with a rewarding opportunity to learn a new skill, collaborate with others and enjoy being part of our local community. These workshops strengthen the relationships between our youth case workers and our young people, building trust and improving mental health so that we can help them face the significant challenges in their lives. (Apologies there are no young people in the photos but it’s our policy not to share their faces).

Here’s a quote from Tom Dent, the Head of our Youth Case Workers: ‘The Buckettys painting workshop was a great opportunity for us to get a lot of young people out who’d never otherwise take part in an artistic project. Young people disengaged from school and needing direction. It was great to see a mixed cohort collaborate well, and we can’t thank the Rotary Club of Balgowlah enough for the opportunity’.

If you are having a team meeting in the coming weeks, I would love to join for 5 minutes to share some colour with your members on the workshop and the young people you have helped, and of course to express our gratitude to you all.

We will be doing a social media post next week to say thank you too. We have also added the Rotary Club of Balgowlah to the Supporters page on our website.

Many thanks again for all your support of Streetwork – it is very much appreciated.

With best regards,

Philip
