January 2023 BBQ

On Tuesday 17 January most of our Balgowlah Rotary cooks did the rest of us proud at our traditional first meeting of 2023, a BBQ on a beautiful evening at Clontarf Reserve.

We all, including several visitors and spouses, saw around 26 of us enjoying camaraderie, good food and just a little reminder of what Rotary is all about....planning future events and assistance to the community, interesting potential future friends & members and having a social time together, as a close group of friends, who are here to help....together.

John O'Brien managed to get a substantial discount for our Wagyu Beef burgers and sausages from the butcher at Stocklands.

Charity Golf Day (postponed from 9th September) at Wakehurst Golf Club.

A great day of golf (Ambrose) with a silent auction, competitions and raffles to raise much needed funds for the projects we support for youth and groups in need both locally and internationally.

Speaker -  Gabriel Radzyminski - Sandon Capital Founder, CIO & Portfolio Manager

As the founder of Sandon Capital in 2008, Gabriel has been involved in the financial services sector for more than 25 years. Gabriel is Chairman of Sandon Capital Investments Limited (ASX:SNC). He is a non-executive director of Future Generation Investment Company Limited (ASX:FGX).  From time to time he takes on Board positions as part of Sandon Capital’s engagements.  Gabriel has a BA(Hons) and MCom both from the University of New South Wales.

"Hole in the Wall" track to Shelly Beach Manly

 1 October 2020 Sue arranged that all met at the Old Manly Hospital site just outside St Paul's school A group of 7 and set off up Bluefish Drive then walked east along a mostly well-formed track in North Head Sanctuary. Very soon we saw wildflowers of various colours and species     We then saw the 9.2 inch gun emplacements and the tunnels that support them. The area was completed in 1938 and in 2017 the guns were moved to be housed in Puckpunyal in Victoria at yet to be built artillery museum. They fired shells weighing 2 tons and had a range of 27Km (that's the distance from North Head to Parramatta).  The" hole in the wall" We didn't hear any frogs at the pond but all enjoyed a great view of the ocean cliffs along the walk and the relaxed at the Boathouse at Shelly Beach. Our 50-year Anniversary & Changeover

Tonight, the Rotary Club of Balgowlah celebrated our 50-year anniversary and changeover evening to launch our 51 st year . An audience of over 80 people attended and had a great night hearing the history and many achievements of the club and its members. A number of awards were made and President Roger Gray passed over the presidential chain to Dr Diana Hart - our incoming president for 2024-25.   The global President of Rotary,  Gordon R. McInally sent a letter to the club congratulating it on the 50 years of Rotary service. President Roger Gray opened the evening and then warmly welcomed our Charter member and past president John Havilah who recounted the early years and how 24 members were present at the Dual Charter Night at Chatswood Civic Centre on Wednesday June 19, 1974. Sun Run 2024

It came around quickly - the first Saturday in February: the annual Sun Run on Sydney's Northern Beaches. The course is either 7km or 10km along the picturesque coast from Dee Why to Manly Beach and the event caters for elite athletes, causal joggers or just out people out to have fun and keeping healthy and active. The meeting point at Curl Curl had 7 brave souls assembled at 5am (Yes AM).  Thankfully the the heat and humidity was not as oppressive as earlier in the the week . Roger, Robert, Ann, Michael, Bev, Lindy and John We made our way to our allocated positions along the course and ensured that motorists didn't enter or attempt to drive along the roads.  The run started at 6:30am - soon wave after wave of groups of runners of differing capabilities and ages all joining in the fun.   The leaders approach These 3 lead runners finished the 10Km course in under 30 minutes Well done to all who competed.
